WHICH WAY, MILLENNIAL MAN?
Written by Jonathan Tessier
Directed by Fay Lynn
Post Productions is excited to present the winner of The 2023 Windsor-Essex Playwriting Contest: Which Way, Millennial Man? by Jonathan Tessier – a thrilling comedic drama about how intergenerational conflicts, prejudice, and changing social norms affect our behaviour and relationships with those we love, as well as our contributions to society as a whole.
SYNOPSIS
Aspiring but floundering writer Chris believes he could finally taste success by writing a book about Joe, the cantankerous father of a school shooter. Through interviews that gradually become conversations about masculinity, white privilege, and infidelity, Joe persuades Chris to start questioning his relationship with wife Laura, leading Chris to become increasingly suspicious of the seemingly close bond between her and her co-worker Patrick
THE AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD 20 MARCH 2024, 7:00 PM, AT THE SHADOWBOX THEATRE (1501 Howard ave. – corner of Howard & Shepherd).
PRODUCTIONS CREW: Which Way, Millennial Man? will be directed by Fay Lynn, produced by Michael K. Potter and Fay Lynn, posters and programs will be created by Kris Simic, and presented in association with Windsor Feminist Theatre.
ROLES AVAILABLE
CHRIS (25-40, male, race: white)
Chris is a somewhat introverted, passive-aggressive, and well-intentioned aspiring writer obsessed with serial killers (though he wouldn’t call it an “obsession” – he just finds the subject interesting). When not working his mind-numbing factory job, Chris spends his days reading, playing video games, cooking, cleaning, and subconsciously avoiding anything beyond surface-level introspection.
LAURA (25-40, female, race: white)
Laura is an Account Executive for a digital marketing firm, as well as Chris’ wife. Married perhaps too young, Laura is a blunt, confident, career-driven woman and the true breadwinner of the household. Throughout her life, Laura’s direct and unapologetic manner has often been misinterpreted as her being a “bitch”.
JOE (50-70, male, race: white)
Joe is a typical blue-collar retiree who has worked for everything he has and is not afraid to remind anyone who will listen of that very fact. He’s had a life he would consider tough but (mostly) fair, which he has survived by matching those qualities measure-for-measure. Joe is a proud man who believes in old-fashioned views of masculinity and does not abide by the claim that his life has been privileged based on his race. Joe’s late son, Bradley, massacred at least ten students in a school shooting ten-years prior to the action of the play.
PATRICK (25-40, male, race: black)
Patrick is an Account Executive (which he would say is just a fancy word for “salesman”) at the same digital marketing firm where Laura works. In fact, he and Laura often work closely together and have become good friends in the process. A charismatic, funny, and charming man, Patrick has cultivated an easy way with people that allows him to be very good at his job and generally amicable when he chooses to be. Though he prides himself in his ability to maintain an even temper, Patrick is not above subtle acts of antagonism and straightforward provocation when he believes they’re warranted.
NOTE: The race of each character is specified because racial conflict is central to the themes and dialogue of the script. All roles are open regarding (dis)ability; we welcome trans, non-binary, and gender-fluid actors.
THE AUDITION PROCESS
Actors must be registered to audition and all actors audition together. Several days before the audition, a copy of all relevant audition sides will be emailed to registrants to help them audition to the best of their ability. During the audition you may be asked to read the same scene multiple times with different scene partners. Don’t worry – you aren’t expected to have the sides memorized!
