4.48 PSYCHOSIS
Written by Sarah Kane
Directed by Michael K. Potter
In February 2024 Post Productions will stage 4.48 Psychosis – the controversial theatrical masterpiece by singularly brilliant playwright Sarah Kane. This production requires actors of considerable creativity, intelligence, and skill. You may be one of those actors!
SYNOPSIS
4.48 Psychosis is a visceral, harrowing, dreamlike, unsettling, and unforgettable poem of a play. The title refers to the time at which the playwright herself would regularly awake and the story takes place between 4:48 and 6:00 AM, the time at which she felt it possible in principle to become part of civilization. In the play Kane is represented as a patient in a mental institution who, between 4:48 and 6:00 AM, experiences her world as a chaotic tangle of emotions – confusion, sorrow, disembodiment, anger, and grief – many of them conveyed to her by voices in the void that surrounds her bed, voices with which she sometimes interacts.
4.48 Psychosis is for mature audiences only due to its intensity and graphic content – including depression, love, suicide, relationships, the use and misuse of drugs to treat mental illness, isolation, and the long-term consequences of trauma.
THE AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD 12 DECEMBER 2023, 7:00 PM, AT THE SHADOWBOX THEATRE (1501 Howard ave. – corner of Howard & Shepherd).
PRODUCTIONS CREW: 4.48 Psychosis will be directed by Michael K. Potter, produced by Fay Lynn and Michael K. Potter, posters and programs will be created by Kris Simic, and presented in association with Windsor Feminist Theatre.
ROLES AVAILABLE
The Voices (18-89, any gender or non-gender, any race/ethnicity, any level of physical (dis)ability – we will cast two actors as The Voices, spectral and eerie characters who represent various emotions and personae that reside (or have resided) in The Patient’s mind, body, and experiences. The Voices will exist on the stage as faces moving in the dark void that surrounds The Patient’s hospital bed. Sometimes they comment on the patient. Sometimes they interact with The Patient. Sometimes they interact with each other. Are they real? By which criteria do we delineate reality? Actors playing The Voices should be prepared to rely on the dynamics and diversity of their vocal skills as they will need to embody diverse and sometimes abstract phenomena.
NOTE: the role of The Patient has been pre-cast.

Several days before the audition, a copy of all relevant audition sides will be emailed to registrants to help them audition to the best of their ability.
